Chapter 1: The Installer's Mindset: Planning Before You Cut

Every serious install starts the same way: with a vehicle that still has all its panels in place, a pile of boxes from the retailer, and a decision that has already been made. You have decided to put better sound in that vehicle. The question is not whether you are going to cut, drill, splice, and screw. You are. The question is whether you are going to do it once, or whether you are going to do it twice.

I have done it twice more times than I care to count. The first time is always the learning experience. The second time is the penalty for skipping the planning phase. This book exists to make sure your first time is your only time. The difference between a system that sounds great for a decade and a system that rattles, hums, and dies in six months is not the brand of amplifier you bought. It is the discipline you apply before you pick up a screwdriver.

Planning is not the boring part of the hobby. Planning is the part where you actually design the system. Everything after that - the cutting, the wiring, the mounting, the tuning - is just mechanical execution of a plan you already made. If the plan is wrong, the execution will be wrong, no matter how clean your solder joints are. If the plan is right, the execution becomes a series of straightforward steps that you can
