Chapter 1: Bench Setup and Movement Evaluation
The bench is the foundation of everything that follows in this book. You can own the finest depthing tool and the most accurate micrometer, but if your bench wobbles, your lighting casts shadows across the pivot holes, and your loupe is smudged, you will introduce errors that no amount of skill can correct. This chapter is about building a workspace that eliminates variables, not adds them. We will cover the specific tools, chemicals, and measuring instruments you need, along with the exact setup parameters that turn a hobbyist's desk into a precision workbench.
1.1 The Bench Itself: Stability and Height
Your bench must be absolutely rigid. A flexing bench top translates into a flexing movement when you apply pressure with a bushing tool or a staking set, which means your reamed holes will be out of round and your pivots will bind. The bench top should be a minimum of 1.75 inches (44 mm) of solid hard maple or Baltic birch plywood. Do not use particleboard; it crushes under localized pressure and will not hold a bench pin or a staking block securely.
The working height is critical for posture and, more importantly, for the steadiness of your hands. When you sit at the bench with your elbows bent at 90 degrees, the working surface should be exactly at the level of your forearms.
