Chapter 1: Why Friendships Matter (and Why This Stage Feels So Hard)

Let’s start with a scene I see all the time, and one you might recognize. It’s a Tuesday afternoon in early October. You’re in the pickup line at preschool or maybe at the kindergarten door. The kids stream out, backpacks bouncing, and you scan for your child’s face. When you spot them, you expect the usual—a wave, a grin, maybe a story about the class hamster or the new book corner. But today, they walk out slowly, head down, and when they reach you, they don’t say hello. They just press their face into your leg and mumble something you have to bend down to catch.

“I had no one to play with today.”

Those seven words. They hit you somewhere deep, in that soft spot between your ribs where all your love and all your worry live. And suddenly, the rest of the day—the grocery list, the meeting you have to prep for, the dinner you haven’t thought about—all of it fades into static. Because in that moment, your child’s loneliness becomes your own. Your heart breaks a little. And then, right on its heels, comes a second wave of feeling, one you might not say out loud: What am I doing wrong?

I want to stop right here, before we go any further, and tell you something I need you to hold onto for the rest of this book, and maybe for the rest of this
