Chapter 1: The Propagator's Paradox
Sarah's basement looks like a plant nursery exploded. Three industrial shelving units hold roughly 400 specimens—a mix of Venus flytraps in various stages of dormancy, pitcher plants at the juvenile stage, sundews in propagation trays, and a corner section dedicated to three years of hand-pollinated butterwort hybrids that she's been refining. She's been growing carnivorous plants for eight years. She propagates constantly. Her friends know to text before visiting because the humidity alone can fog glasses.
Last month, she had a customer contact her through a mutual friend asking about a specific cultivar of *Nepenthes* that Sarah had mentioned growing. The exchange went like this: Sarah said she had juveniles available. The customer asked the price. Sarah froze. She'd never sold a plant before. She had no idea what to charge. She knew what she'd paid for the mother plant five years ago—$45. She knew roughly how much electricity, media, and time had gone into the juvenile. But translating that into a number that didn't feel like either stealing from herself or pricing herself out of existence? She couldn't do it. The customer waited three days for an answer. Sarah never replied. The customer bought from someone else.
