Chapter 1: Understanding Abrasive Blasters
Abrasive blasting, in its most direct form, is the act of propelling a stream of solid particles at a surface at high velocity to clean it, shape it, or prepare it for a coating. The 'abrasive blaster' is the tool that does this, but it is more accurate to think of it as a system rather than a single unit. That system includes the pressure vessel or siphon assembly, the nozzle you hold, the source of compressed air, and the media itself. Understanding how these parts work together is the difference between a predictable, efficient operation and a frustrating, dangerous mess.
Strip away the jargon, and the principle is simple: kinetic energy does the work. Particles of a chosen material are accelerated in a stream of air (or water, in some systems). When they hit a surface, they transfer that energy, fracturing or knocking away the material you want to remove. The effectiveness of the process depends on a few crucial variables: the mass and hardness of the media, the velocity it achieves, and the angle at which it strikes the work surface. A soft medium like walnut shell will remove paint from a car body without damaging the steel underneath. A hard, sharp medium like crushed glass or aluminum oxide can cut into a steel surface, creating a fresh anchor pattern for a new coating. The same tool, the same machine, produces wildly different results simply by changing the media in the hopper.
