Chapter 1: Understanding Altitude Training Masks

An altitude training mask is a piece of athletic equipment that fits over your nose and mouth, creating a controlled resistance to breathing. It is not an oxygen tank, and it is not a device that actually simulates the atmosphere at high altitude. This is the single most common misconception about the product, and it is important to address it directly because the rest of this handbook builds on that truth.

The mask works through a series of adjustable valves that restrict the flow of air, both when you inhale and when you exhale. When you increase the resistance, you force your respiratory muscles—the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles between your ribs—to work harder to pull air in and push it out. This is a form of strength training for the respiratory system. The primary intended effect is not to change the oxygen content of your blood, but to increase the endurance and power of the muscles that support breathing.

To understand what that means in practice, compare it to lifting a dumbbell. When you curl a 10 kg weight, you are not simulating the feeling of carrying a heavy suitcase; you are building the bicep muscle so that carrying a suitcase later feels easier. An altitude mask works on the same principle for the muscles involved in respiration. It strengthens them so that during regular, intense exercise, breathing feels less like a bottleneck and more like a supporting system.
