Chapter 1: Understanding Aquarium Overflow Boxes

An aquarium overflow box is a device that moves water from a display tank down into a sump or filter system below. It is a purely mechanical component, but it is the one part of a sump-based system that, when it fails, causes immediate property damage. The box itself is typically a small acrylic or glass vessel mounted on or inside the display tank. Water enters it at the surface, then falls through a pipe into the lower filtration system. A return pump moves the filtered water back up to the display tank. The overflow box is the bridge that makes that continuous cycle possible.

To understand why the overflow box exists, you need to understand the water level. In a tank with a sump, the display tank holds a fixed volume of water, and the sump holds a variable volume. The overflow box sets the maximum water level in the display tank. A spillway or weir at the top of the box pulls the surface layer of water, which is where organic waste, protein, and dissolved pollutants concentrate. This is a deliberate design choice, not an accident - surface skimming removes matter that would otherwise lower oxygen exchange and cloud the water.
