An automotive alarm system, regardless of its marketing name, is a collection of sensors, a central controller, and output devices working in concert to detect a security event and alert the owner or deter the perpetrator. The accessories are every component that makes up this system beyond the bare-bones, factory-installed electronic control unit (ECU) and its basic shock sensor. To understand accessories, you must first understand the system architecture. A modern aftermarket alarm system is a small network of components, each with a specific, defined job.

The central processing unit, sometimes called the brain or the control module, is the system's decision-maker. It receives electrical signals from sensors, interprets them against its programming, and decides whether to trigger an output such as a siren pulse or a door-lock command. Accessories, in their broadest sense, break down into three main functional groups: input devices, output devices, and integration modules. Input devices, like shock sensors, microwave radar sensors, and tilt switches, gather data about the vehicle's physical state. Output devices, such as sirens, LED indicators, and starter-kill relays, execute the system's response. Integration modules bridge the alarm system to the vehicle's existing electrical system to enable functions like smart key disarm, remote start, or GPS tracking.
