An axe head is a carefully shaped piece of steel with one primary job: to concentrate force. It is not a simple wedge, though it is often described as one. It is a controlled mass of metal, heat-treated to a specific hardness, with a geometry that determines how it bites into wood, how it splits fibers, and how much abuse it can take before it fails. If you understand the steel, you understand the axe. If you do not, you are buying shapes and hoping for the best.

The first thing to know is that almost all axe heads you will encounter are made from high-carbon steel. This is not a marketing term; it is a metallurgical specification. The 'high carbon' designation means the steel contains roughly 0.75% to 1.0% carbon by weight. This is not incidental. The carbon content allows the steel to be hardened by heating and quenching. On a simple level, more carbon means the steel can get harder, but also more brittle. Cheap heads and some lower-end imports may use lower-carbon steel that cannot be hardened effectively. This is why a cheap head can feel 'mushy' at the edge and dull quickly. It physically cannot hold a sharp edge because it lacks the material properties to do so.

Hardening is done in a forge or furnace, heating the head to a specific temperature, usually around 780-850 degrees Celsius (1436-1562 degrees Fahrenheit), depending on the exact alloy. The
