A baseball or softball pitching mound is not simply a pile of dirt in the middle of a field. It is a precisely engineered, load-bearing structure that directly influences a pitcher's mechanics, a game's pace, and the safety of a 90-mile-per-hour fastball. For the purposes of this handbook, a pitching mound is defined as the raised, sloped platform located at the center of the infield, from which the pitcher delivers the ball to home plate. The most fundamental fact about a pitching mound is that it is a performance tool, not a convenience. The elevation at the pitching rubber creates a downward plane toward the batter. When the pitcher releases the ball from a higher point, the effective angle of the pitch to the strike zone changes, making fastballs appear faster and breaking pitches more deceptive.
