A bicycle foot peg is a platform attached to the frame of a bicycle that provides a secondary place for a rider to rest a foot. It is not a pedal, and it is not a footrest in the sense of a motorcycle passenger peg. On a bicycle, a foot peg is a utility component. It allows a rider to shift weight off the pedals, change body position, or accommodate a passenger on a rear rack. To understand it properly, you have to stop thinking of it as an aftermarket cosmetic piece and start thinking of it as a structural element that changes how a bike is used.

Consider the most common reason a foot peg is installed: a rider needs a place to put their foot when they are not pedaling. This sounds obvious, but the geometry matters. On a long downhill stretch, a rider might want to stand on the pedals to brace their body, but that position keeps their center of mass forward and forces them to grip the handlebars. With a peg installed on the rear axle or on the chainstay, the rider can move a foot back, lower their center of gravity, and take pressure off their arms. This is the same reasoning that has put foot pegs on mountain bikes for decades, though they are functionally different from the pointy, small pegs used on BMX race bikes. A "foot peg" is not a single standardized part. It is
