Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Shock Pumps
A bicycle shock pump is a small, manually operated air pump designed for one specific purpose: to inflate an air-sprung suspension fork or rear shock. While a floor pump or a compressor can force air into a tire, a shock pump is engineered to handle the physics of a suspension air spring, which is a very different environment from a tire. Understanding that difference is the key to understanding the entire tool.
An air-sprung suspension unit uses a sealed chamber of air as its spring. As the suspension compresses, the air volume in the chamber decreases and the pressure increases. This relationship is not linear; it is exponential. This is why you can set a rear shock to have 20% sag with only 200 PSI, but a bottom-out could require over 400 PSI. The air spring acts as a progressive spring, providing a supple feel at the beginning of the stroke but requiring a massive amount of force to fully compress. This is a crucial characteristic of air suspension, but it has a direct consequence for the pump: to change the pressure in the spring, you must be able to force a tiny amount of air into a chamber that might hold only a few cubic inches of volume.
