The first misconception to dispense with is that a "camera gear" is a single, simple accessory. It is not one thing. It is a category of mechanical components built to translate motion and force with the precision required by modern imaging systems. This category spans the internal brass gear train that spins a lens's focus ring, the rack-and-pinion drive inside a professional follow focus unit, the worm drive in a heavy-duty tripod head that allows a film camera to pan smoothly, and the high-torque timing gears connected to a dedicated focus motor. In every case, the physical purpose is the same: to convert raw rotary motion into a controlled, repeatable, and precise linear or angular movement.
To understand camera gears, you must understand their relationship to the fundamental problem of photography and cinematography: holding an image steady while manipulating an optical system. A camera lens is a delicate assembly of glass elements that must be positioned with tolerances measured in hundredths of a millimeter. The human hand, even a skilled one, is not naturally that precise. When you turn a focus ring that is driven directly by a helical thread, a slight tremor in your fingers translates directly to a shift in the focal plane. This is fine for a static shot at a moderate aperture, but it is wholly inadequate for pulling focus on a moving subject with a shallow depth of field, or for adjusting a 600mm telephoto lens atop a car rig.
