But the physical reality of a limb moving through water makes this simple task surprisingly difficult. A bathtub is not a static environment; water pressure changes with the depth of immersion, movements create currents that find vulnerable seams, and pulling a sleeve up over a bent knee or elbow introduces mechanical stress that can break a seal. The consequences of failure are not just a soggy sleeve but a compromised cast and a damp, macerated limb that makes healing slower and opens the door to skin irritation and infection. To understand what a protector actually does, you have to look at what it protects. A traditional plaster cast is built on layers of cotton or synthetic padding, a rigid outer shell of plaster, and a stockinette against the skin. That padding is hydrophilic; it wicks moisture and holds it, retaining body heat and creating an environment of persistent dampness against the skin. This maceration softens the stratum corneum of the skin, making it more fragile and vulnerable to friction and infection.
