A crib conversion kit is the hardware and frame components that transform a full-size crib into a toddler bed, and often later into a daybed and a full-size bed frame. It is not a mattress, a rail, or a decorative add-on. It is the structural mechanism that replaces the drop gate or fixed front rail of the crib, lowering the sleeping surface and providing a new barrier that a toddler can climb over independently. The conversion kit is the difference between a piece of baby furniture that becomes obsolete in two years and one that serves the family for a decade.

To understand why these kits exist, you have to start with the crib itself. A standard full-size crib has four sides, each roughly 28 to 32 inches high at the top rail. The mattress support platform sits at a height that allows a parent to reach in without bending, usually around 24 inches from the floor when the infant is young.
