What a De-icer Actually Does
A de-icer is any substance applied to a surface that lowers the freezing point of water, causing existing ice or snow to melt, or preventing new ice from forming. That's the entire function, and everything else — the marketing claims, the "fast-acting" labels, the premium prices — is just a variation on that single chemical act. All de-icers work by one of two mechanisms: they either depress the freezing point of the water already present, or they generate heat that physically melts the ice. Most commercial products rely on the first mechanism, usually by dissolving into the thin film of water that exists between the ice and the surface, creating a brine that stays liquid at a lower temperature than pure water.
To understand why a de-icer works, you need to understand the ice itself. Ice doesn't form all at once across a surface. It starts at nucleation points — microscopic scratches, dust particles, or cold spots — and grows outward. The bond between ice and a concrete or asphalt surface is a mechanical one; the ice physically keys into the pores and micro-cracks of the material. A de-icer attacks this bond at the surface. When a salt particle or a drop of brine lands on the ice, it begins to dissolve using the thin liquid layer that always exists on the surface of ice, even at temperatures well below freezing.
