Consider how a donut maker does its job. The core of almost every machine is a set of heated plates, each with one or more cavities. The plate material is typically aluminum or cast iron, chosen for its ability to hold and conduct heat. The cavity is coated with a non-stick surface, usually PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or a ceramic-based composite.
