At its most basic, a dreamcatcher is a flexible hoop — traditionally made from a willow branch — with a membrane of webbing stretched across the interior. A hanging loop is attached at the top, and pendants (typically feathers, beads, and small objects of personal significance) are suspended from the bottom or woven into the web. That is the entire structure. There are no moving parts, no electronic components, and no internal mechanisms. Yet the performance of this simple structure depends on a set of engineering-relevant choices: the species and treatment of the wood, the type and diameter of the cordage, the tension of the web, the method of lashing, and the quality of the hanging hardware.
