A dry ice maker is a specialized press that converts liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) into solid CO2, commonly known as dry ice. It is not a refrigeration unit in the traditional sense, and it does not create cold. Instead, it is a pressure and phase-change system. The machine takes a liquid that exists under high pressure and forces it to rapidly change state, first into a snow-like solid and then, through mechanical compression, into a dense block or pellet. Understanding this fundamental process is the key to operating any dry ice maker correctly, whether it is a small benchtop pelletizer in a university lab or a large industrial block press that produces a 50-kilogram slab in under five minutes.

Relying on an external supplier for dry ice means dealing with delivery schedules, minimum order quantities, and the inevitable sublimation loss that occurs during transport.
