Chapter 1: Understanding Ecospheres

An ecosphere is not a novelty paperweight with shrimp inside. It is an engineered, closed aquatic ecosystem that operates on the same fundamental biological and chemical principles as a planet or a lake, but on a scale measured in liters. Understanding those principles is not academic curiosity. It is the difference between a self-sustaining display that thrives for years and a glass jar of murky water containing dead shrimp that you are embarrassed to show anyone.

At its core, an ecosphere is a sealed glass container holding saltwater, a few species of algae, a colony of bacteria, and a small population of marine invertebrates, most commonly red cherry shrimp (Halocaridina rubra). The container is hermetically sealed. Nothing goes in, and nothing comes out. The entire existence of everything inside depends on a closed loop of nutrient cycling that was established when the sphere was manufactured and, if the system is healthy, has been running ever since. The food chain is simple. The algae use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and dissolved nutrients into organic matter. The shrimp eat the algae and the biofilm that grows on the glass and substrate. The shrimp produce waste, primarily ammonia. The bacteria in the substrate and the water column break down that ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate. The algae then consume the nitrate as a nutrient source, completing the cycle. This is the nitrogen cycle, and it is the beating heart of the entire system.
