The Core Distinction: Electric vs. Power

The first thing to understand is that the terms "electric shower" and "power shower" are not interchangeable, although they are frequently used as if they are. The distinction is fundamental to how the unit works, the plumbing it requires, and the installation costs. An electric shower is a self-contained appliance that heats water on demand using an internal heating element. It is fed with a cold water supply, typically from a storage tank or the mains, and it heats that water to a safe temperature just before it leaves the shower head. It requires a high-power electrical supply because heating water is an energy-intensive process.

A power shower, on the other hand, does not heat water. It is essentially a high-capacity pump or a pump-and-thermostat assembly that is installed to boost the pressure of an existing hot and cold water supply, usually from a gravity-fed cylinder and tank system. Its primary purpose is to increase the flow rate to deliver a more forceful shower. When you turn on a power shower, it draws the stored hot and cold water, mixes it to your set temperature, and pumps it through the shower head at a pressure far greater than the static head of the storage tank could provide on its own.
