Chapter 1: Understanding Exercise Wedges
Walk into any serious strength and conditioning facility, physical therapy clinic, or even a well-appointed home gym, and you will likely see a wedge-shaped block of firm foam or plastic. It is a deceptively simple object: a sloped platform that raises one part of the user's body relative to the rest. However, to treat it as a simple prop is to miss its utility entirely. The exercise wedge is a tool of load manipulation, joint angle adjustment, and range-of-motion accommodation. Understanding what it actually does, and the physics that make it work, is the difference between using it as a passive support and using it as a piece of precision training equipment.
At its core, the function of an exercise wedge is to alter the line of gravity relative to the body's joints and limbs. When you stand on a flat surface, your feet are level with each other, and the ground reaction force is distributed evenly across the sole. When you place your feet on a wedge with the toes elevated, the ground reaction force is no longer distributed evenly. The line of gravity shifts, and a compensatory change occurs in the position of the pelvis, lumbar spine, and the muscles of the lower leg. This is not a minor adjustment. A study of lower limb biomechanics frequently notes that even a 10-degree change in ankle dorsiflexion or plantarflexion results in significant alterations in the activation patterns of the gastrocnemius, soleus, and tibialis anterior.
