To understand the felting needle, you must first understand the material it works with. Animal fibers like wool have a scaly outer layer that, when heat, moisture, and pressure are applied, causes the fibers to migrate, entangle, and lock together. This process is called wet felting, and it is the method your grandmother might have used to make a pair of slippers. But there is a second, more controllable process called dry felting or needle felting. In this process, a needle with a series of barbs, or notches, is punched into the fibrous mass.
