Chapter 1: Understanding Fire Alarm Control Panels
A fire alarm control panel, often abbreviated as FACP, is the central processing and control unit for the entire fire alarm system. It is not the smoke detector on your ceiling, nor is it the flashing strobe in the corridor; it is the brain that sits in an electrical room or a secured closet, silently monitoring every connected device. To understand it, you need to abandon the idea of a single alarm point. You must think of the panel as the central hub of a network of sensors, signaling devices, and power sources, all working in concert to detect a fire and alert the building's occupants while providing critical information to responders.
Think of a typical three-story office building. On every floor, there are heat detectors and smoke detectors in the hallways, manual pull stations next to the exits, and horns and strobes throughout. None of these devices are independent. Each one is wired back to the FACP located in the main electrical room on the ground floor. The panel provides the power for these devices to operate. It constantly checks their status. When you press a pull station or a detector goes into alarm, that change in state is immediately transmitted back to the panel over the wiring. The panel is the only device in the system that is allowed to make the decision to declare a fire, as well as the decisions on what to do next.
