Chapter 1: Understanding Fusible Tape
Fusible tape is a heat-activated adhesive in a continuous strip form. It is not a glue you squeeze from a tube, and it is not a pressure-sensitive tape. It sits inert on a roll, sometimes for months, and only becomes sticky when you raise its temperature above a specific point, usually between 80°C and 160°C depending on the product. When it reaches that temperature, it melts, wets the surface of the materials around it, and then sets as it cools to form a solid bond.
That mechanism seems simple, but getting it right in practice is a matter of precision. The three variables that determine bond quality are heat, pressure, and dwell time. Get one wrong and you either have a weak bond, visible adhesive bleed-through, or a ruined piece of fabric. What fusible tape actually is
A fusible tape has three distinct layers, and each one affects performance. The first is the adhesive itself. The second is the carrier, which is the structural substance that holds the adhesive in a usable strip form. The third is the release liner, a protective film that keeps the adhesive from sticking to itself or to the wrong thing before you use it. Not every fusible tape has all three layers, but every one of
