At its most basic level, a hook and loop fastener is a pair of textile ribbons that lock together when pressed. One ribbon carries thousands of tiny hooks, usually molded from nylon or a similar polymer. The other carries a dense pile of looped filaments. Press the two together, and the hooks catch the loops to form a closure that is strong enough to secure a cargo bag, yet easy to open with a single deliberate pull. It is an ingeniously simple idea, but the plumbing behind that simplicity is surprisingly complex, and the differences between a ten-cent fastener and a professional-grade one are vast.

The functional architecture of a hook and loop fastener works because of mechanical locking, not chemical bonding. There is no glue or resin holding the two halves together when they are engaged. The holding power comes entirely from the interference fit between the small hooks and the loops. When a hook pushes through the open space between several loops and then its tip travels back around a filament that is slightly wider than the gap, it creates a physical lock.
