Chapter 1: Understanding Kitchen Cabinets
A kitchen cabinet is not a simple wooden box, though it can look like one from the outside. It is a precisely engineered assembly of panels, joints, and hardware, designed to bear significant weight, resist moisture and heat, and maintain its geometry for decades. Whether you are specifying cabinets for a large project or assessing the ones in your own home, the first step is to understand what is actually holding your dishes and cookware. The difference between a cabinet that lasts forty years and one that fails in ten is almost entirely in the details of its construction.
Consider the anatomy of a single wall cabinet. The main structural component is the cabinet box, which is comprised of two side panels, a bottom panel, and a top panel. A back panel is attached to the rear for racking strength, and the front face is finished with a face frame (on a framed cabinet) or finished edge banding on the sides (on a frameless cabinet). The box panels, not the door, are the primary structure. The door is only a decorative and functional cover. If the box is weak or the joints are compromised, the finest door in the world will not compensate for it.
The core material of the box is where cost and durability first diverge. The three main types are plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and particleboard. A typical 3/4-inch cabinet-grade plywood has multiple layers of wood veneer, cross-banded and glued under
