Manicure glue is a fast-setting adhesive used to bond nail tips, press-on nails, and nail repairs to the natural nail plate. In commercial terms, it is almost always a cyanoacrylate-based product, the same family of adhesives used in medical wound closure and industrial bonding. But the word "glue" undersells what is happening at the contact surface. When you apply a drop of manicure glue to a clean, dry nail, you are initiating a polymerization reaction that turns a liquid monomer into a solid polymer in under a minute. The strength of that bond depends less on the thickness of the glue line than on the quality of the surfaces being joined and the chemistry of the specific formula.

Understanding what manicure glue actually is begins with its active ingredient. Standard ethyl cyanoacrylate is a low-viscosity liquid that polymerizes when it contacts moisture. Water, even in the microscopic film on a fingertip, acts as the catalyst. The molecules link together rapidly, forming long chains that create a rigid, high-strength plastic. This is why "instant" adhesives set in seconds to minutes. The reaction is exothermic, meaning it releases heat, although in the thin layers used for nail work the temperature rise is usually imperceptible. What you feel as a "hot" bond in a thick blob is the same reaction happening in bulk.

The nail industry uses modified cyanoacrylate formulations rather than generic superglue, for several functional reasons. Generic household cyanoacrylate is brittle and tends to yellow quickly.
