Mascara primer is a specific, distinct cosmetic product, yet it is frequently misunderstood. It is not a mascara, although it is applied with a similar wand and comes in a similar tube. It is not a lash serum, although it often contains conditioning ingredients. It is best understood as a preparatory base coat applied to the eyelashes before mascara. Its sole purpose is to alter the surface and structure of the natural lash so that the subsequently applied mascara performs better and the lash itself is treated better in the process.

To grasp what that means in practice, consider the natural hair of an eyelash. Under a microscope, a lash is not a smooth cylinder. It is covered in a layer of overlapping scales, known as the cuticle. These scales are like the shingles on a roof: they lie flat and overlap in a single direction, from root to tip. When a lash is healthy, the cuticle is smooth and intact. When the lash is damaged, or simply as it ages, these scales lift and roughen. Mascara, which is essentially a pigmented suspension of waxes and film-forming polymers, flows over this surface. On a smooth cuticle, it spreads thinly and evenly.
