What a sensor really is

A sensor is a transducer. It converts one form of energy into another, specifically a physical quantity such as temperature, pressure, position, speed, or chemical concentration into an electrical signal that a control unit or a gauge can interpret. The physical quantity is the measurand. The electrical signal is the output.
