Chapter 1: Understanding Motorcycle Tires
A motorcycle tire is a flexible, load-bearing composite structure that provides traction, absorbs road irregularities, and keeps the wheel rim off the ground. Its function is not merely to roll, but to generate the forces that allow a motorcycle to accelerate, brake, and corner. Because a motorcycle leans to turn, the tire's shape and compound must work across a constantly changing contact patch. When the bike is straight up, the center of the tire contacts the road. As the bike leans over, the contact patch shifts toward the shoulder of the tire, and the geometry of that transition is fundamental to how the bike handles.
To understand this fully, you have to start with the components. A tire is built on a set of beads, which are bundles of high-tensile steel wire embedded in rubber that lock the tire onto the rim. Above the bead is the sidewall, which protects the carcass plies and supports the load of the bike. The sidewall is not a zero-force part; it flexes. That flex is what allows the tire to absorb bumps, but it also generates heat and stress. The carcass itself is made of plies of fabric, typically polyester or aramid, laid over the beads and covered with rubber. The plies are the shape-holding skeleton of the tire, and their orientation defines the tire's behavior.
There are two constructions you will encounter: bias and radial. In a bias tire, the plies run diagonally across the tire, crisscrossing
