Walk into any art supply store and you will see them: rows of bottles and jars labeled "glaze," "gel," "paste," "extender," and "flow enhancer." They sit alongside the paint, promising to do something, but rarely explaining exactly what that something is. The confusion is understandable. A paint medium is not a simple thinner, and it is not a varnish. It is an engineered additive designed to alter the physical and chemical properties of paint in a controlled way. To use it effectively, you need to understand what those alterations are, how they occur, and why they matter to the final result.

At its core, a paint medium is a formulation of three primary components: a binder, a carrier (or solvent), and functional additives. The binder is the same resin used in the paint itself—acrylic polymer for acrylics, linseed or alkyd oil for oils, gum arabic for watercolors. The carrier is the vehicle that keeps the binder workable: water for acrylics and watercolors, mineral spirits for oils, or a specific co-solvent system for specialty products. The additives are the differentiators. They include rheology modifiers (thickeners and thinners), wetting agents, defoamers, UV stabilizers, and fillers like silica or marble dust. By varying the proportions and chemistry of these components, manufacturers create mediums with distinct and predictable behaviors.
