A PAP mask is the mechanical interface between a positive airway pressure (PAP) device and a human respiratory system. It takes a stream of pressurized air from a tube and delivers it to the nose, the mouth, or both, in a way that creates and maintains a seal against the skin. The mask is not a passive adapter. It is a precision component that must hold pressure, allow natural breathing, avoid irritation, and survive constant handling for months or years. A well-chosen mask can make the difference between successful therapy and a drawer full of abandoned equipment.
Consider the clinical environment: a sleep clinic that prescribes continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea relies on masks to deliver a constant pressure, typically between 4 and 20 cm H2O, to keep the upper airway from collapsing during sleep. If the mask leaks at the seal, the machine's internal sensors may compensate with higher flow, but the user ends up with air blasting across their eyes or mouth, disrupted sleep, and compliance failures.
