A patient lift is a mechanical device designed to transfer an individual who has limited mobility from one surface to another. The most common transfers are from a bed to a wheelchair, a wheelchair to a toilet, or from a chair to a standing position. While the definition is simple, the reality is that these devices are critical components of modern healthcare delivery, affecting the safety, dignity, and health outcomes of patients and the physical well-being of the caregivers who assist them.

To understand the importance of a patient lift, one must first understand the problem it solves. Manual patient handling is a leading cause of musculoskeletal injuries among nurses, nursing assistants, and home health aides. Injuries are not limited to the back; shoulders, knees, and wrists are also frequently damaged. The physical strain of a single transfer can be significant, but it is the cumulative effect of performing dozens of transfers per shift, day after day, that causes lasting harm.
