A pedicure chair is not a chair with a foot bath attached. It is a self-contained workstation that combines seating, a wash basin, a water circulation system, plumbing, electrical components, and often mechanical adjustment mechanisms. Each of these systems must work simultaneously and reliably, hour after hour, in a wet environment where chemicals and biological material are always present. When one system fails, the chair becomes useless and the appointment must be canceled. Understanding what each part does and how they depend on each other is the foundation for every other topic in this handbook, from choosing the right unit to diagnosing a pump failure at 9:00 AM on a Saturday.

The most visible and familiar component is the basin, the recessed bowl at the front of the chair where the client places their feet. Basins are commonly made of acrylic, polyethylene, or stainless steel, and each material has trade-offs. Acrylic is inexpensive and easy to mold into ergonomic shapes, but it scratches easily and can harbor bacteria in fine grooves. Polyethylene is more resistant to chemicals but heavier and often less contoured. Stainless steel is the most durable and easiest to sanitize, but it is also the most expensive and can feel cold against the skin. The basin's shape and depth matter more than most buyers realize: it must allow the client's legs to rest comfortably while providing enough water coverage to cover the feet.
