Chapter 1: Understanding Pet Training Pads
The Working Definition
A pet training pad is a single-use, absorbent, disposable mat designed to capture and contain animal urine. That is the entire product. Everything else - the brand name, the pattern on the surface, the scent attractant - is an attempt to differentiate a commodity. To understand the product, you must dissect it into its physical layers and understand the function of each layer under real conditions.
The standard pad consists of four functional zones. The top sheet is a non-woven fabric that allows liquid to pass through quickly. Below that sits a distribution layer, usually made of a tissue or a pulp mixture, which spreads the liquid horizontally so it does not pool in one spot. The third layer is the absorbent core, a blend of fluff pulp and superabsorbent polymer (SAP), which is the material that swells into a gel when wet. Finally, a waterproof polyethylene film forms the bottom layer, intended to prevent any liquid from passing through to the floor. A simple scent or attractant may be sprayed onto the top sheet to encourage the animal to use the pad.
This construction is not speculative. It is the same fundamental design used by nearly every manufacturer globally, from budget private-label brands to premium marketing-heavy labels. What differentiates products is the quality and quantity of these materials, not the presence or absence of the layers.
