What a Pool Cleaner Hose Actually Is

A pool cleaner hose is a flexible tube that moves water, debris, and chemical residue between the pool's cleaning mechanism and the filtration system. It is not merely a pipe; it is a precision component in a hydraulic circuit that must maintain a seal under internal pressure or vacuum, resist crushing and kinking from being dragged across concrete and tile, and survive long-term exposure to ultraviolet light, chlorine, and temperature fluctuations. In a typical residential pool, the hose is the only component of the cleaning system that the pool owner physically handles on a regular basis, yet it is the least understood.

There are three broad families of pool cleaner hoses: suction-side hoses, pressure-side hoses, and debris or vacuum hoses. A suction-side hose connects a manual vacuum head or a suction-side robotic cleaner to the skimmer or the dedicated vacuum line. The pool pump creates a negative pressure differential inside the hose. The water outside the hose, at atmospheric pressure, pushes water and dirt into the vacuum head and up through the hose into the skimmer basket and then the filter. A pressure-side hose works in exactly the opposite way. The pump returns water from the filter back to the pool under positive pressure. A pressure-side cleaner, often driven by a separate booster pump, receives high-pressure water through this hose, which powers a turbine inside the cleaner mechanism that moves the unit and creates a suction effect
