A power adapter or charger is a self-contained device that takes electrical energy in one form and delivers it in another form that a specific electronic product can use. That is the entire job. The complexity lies in the details: the voltage must be correct, the current must be sufficient, the connection must be compatible, and the output must be stable enough for the device to function without damage. Every time you plug a laptop into a wall socket, plug a phone into a USB port, or power a piece of industrial equipment from a DIN-rail supply, you are relying on one of these accessories. They are so common that they are usually ignored, but when they fail, they take down everything attached to them.
At the most basic level, these devices perform one of two conversions. The first, and most common, is AC-to-DC conversion. The wall outlet in your office or home delivers alternating current (AC) at a nominal voltage of 110-120V or 220-240V, depending on your country. Most electronics run on low-voltage direct current (DC). A laptop adapter takes that mains AC, steps it down to a lower voltage, rectifies it to DC, and regulates it to a stable output, typically between 5V and 20V. The second conversion is DC-to-DC, which takes an existing DC source, like a car's 12V cigarette lighter socket or a 24V industrial bus, and steps it up or down to match a device's requirements. A
