A printer, copier, or fax machine is, at its core, a paper-feeding system, a toner or ink delivery system, a fusing or drying system, and a control system. The control system is built almost entirely on printed circuit boards — flat assemblies of fiberglass, copper traces, and electronic components that convert a digital file into physical marks on a page. When a board fails, the machine may refuse to power on, feed paper incorrectly, print blank or streaked pages, or simply stop mid-job with a cryptic error code. Understanding which board does what, how they interact, and how to test them is the difference between a 20-minute fix and replacing a $1,500 machine or waiting days for a dealer service call.
To work on these boards effectively, you need to be able to look at a machine and map its functions to specific pieces of hardware. Most modern machines, regardless of whether they are a $200 home inkjet or a $20,000 production copier, share a common architectural blueprint. There is a formatter board (sometimes called the controller board or main board) that handles image processing and communication with the outside world. There is an engine controller board that sequences the mechanical operations — picking up paper, driving rollers, activating the laser or printhead. There is a power supply board that converts AC wall voltage into the regulated DC rails the electronics need, and a high-voltage power supply (HVPS) that generates
