Puppet and puppet theater accessories are the physical tools that make a performance possible, and they are far more numerous and specialized than most people realize. When a professional puppeteer or a serious enthusiast refers to "accessories," they are not talking about a few props or a spare set of strings. The category encompasses the full technical infrastructure of a performance: the puppets themselves, the controls that operate them, the stages and prosceniums they perform on, the lighting that shapes how they are seen, and the rigging that makes it all hang together safely. Each of these elements has its own sub-systems, materials, and maintenance requirements. Understanding how they function together is the first step to buying well, performing without failures, and building a durable practice.

The Ecosystem of a Performance

Think of a single marionette performance. The marionette is the most visible element, but it is useless without the control (the wooden bar or crosspiece that holds the strings), the strings themselves (which have specific weight and stretch properties), and the stage structure (which must provide enough headroom for the control and enough depth for the performer to stand comfortably). Add to that the lighting rig, which must be positioned to illuminate the puppet without casting the puppeteer's shadow onto the stage, and the sound system, which must project the voice clearly while hiding the microphone from the audience.
