An RC airship is a lighter-than-air (LTA) vehicle that you pilot remotely. It flies because the gas inside its envelope is lighter than the air it displaces. That sounds simple, but every design decision, operational limit, and maintenance task in this book traces back to that one fact. Unlike a helicopter or fixed-wing drone, an airship does not need to move forward to stay aloft. It hovers by default. That single characteristic makes it useful for tasks where rotary drones are inefficient or impractical.

To understand what an RC airship is, you need to discard the mental image of a classic zeppelin. The category includes everything from a 1.5-meter indoor advertising blimp that carries a small LED sign to a 9-meter outdoor system lifting a camera gimbal and telemetry package for a survey job. The engineering principles are the same, but the materials, control systems, and flight behavior differ dramatically. A toy-grade blimp uses a brushed motor, a single-axis rudder, and helium from a party store. A commercial system uses a ripstop polyester envelope, a brushless thrust-vectoring motor pod, differential thrust, and an onboard barometer feeding altitude data to the pilot.
