A replacement shelf is not a board. It is a structural component with a job description: to hold a specified load across a specified span, without bending more than a few millimeters, for the life of the system it belongs to. When you buy a replacement shelf, you are not buying wood, glass, or wire. You are buying engineering capacity. The failure to understand this is the root cause of nearly every collapsed closet, bowed bookcase, and detached wire basket in service today.
Consider a typical failure. A building maintenance supervisor at a mid-sized law firm needs to outfit a storage closet with new shelving because the old laminated shelves have warped at the front edge. The opening is 36 inches wide, and the existing metal uprights are punched with rows of slots on 1-inch centers. The supervisor orders a replacement shelf from an office supply catalog, choosing the cheapest laminate board available. The shelf arrives, clicks into place, and looks fine. Three weeks later, a heavy box of legal files is placed at the center of the 36-inch span. That unit is rated for 60 pounds per foot, but the shelf is a particleboard core with a 10-mm thickness.
