Consider what happens to a ski bag between the moment you hand it to an airline agent and the moment you collect it at the carousel. It moves through a conveyor system, is stacked by hand into a container or onto a cart, is loaded into an aircraft belly hold, and then the process repeats in reverse. At every step, the bag is subject to impacts from other luggage, compression from bags stacked on top of it, and the mechanical forces of conveyor rollers and sorting chutes. The total handling distance is rarely under a kilometer, and the impacts are not gentle. This is the physical reality that defines what a ski or snowboard bag actually is: a protective transport system, not a storage container.

The common assumption is that a ski bag is simply a long, padded sleeve. That assumption is the reason so many skis arrive at their destination with dented edges, broken tips, or torn zipper pulls. A bag is not a single component; it is a system of materials and structures that work together. The shell fabric, the padding layer, the liner, the zipper, the handles, and the straps each have a specific job. They must work together to absorb energy, distribute forces, and protect the contents. If any one component fails, the whole system fails.
