Chapter 1: Understanding Stirrups
A stirrup is a mechanical interface. It has one primary job: to transfer the weight and control signals of a rider's lower leg to the saddle and, through it, to the horse. Everything else about a stirrup—its material, its angle, its tread, its weight rating—is a refinement of that single function. But because a stirring hangs from a flexible leather or synthetic strap, because it must accept a booted foot at variable angles, and because the rider's weight is not static but dynamic and often abrupt, the geometry and construction of a stirrup have to be far more precise than they look.
Consider what happens during a jump at a moderate pace. The rider rises slightly out of the saddle at the approach, presses the lower leg against the horse's side, and then, at the moment of takeoff, the horse's mass pushes upward. The rider's full body weight, potentially 90 kilograms or more including tack, gear, and momentum, drops into the stirrup. The load is applied not as a clean vertical force but as a combination of downward pressure and forward push. The stirrup's branch, tread, and hinge (if it has one) must respond to all of that without deforming permanently, without fracturing, and without the foot slipping. It must then release the foot cleanly when the rider bends the ankle on landing. This happens hundreds of times in a single schooling session.
