At its simplest, a time and attendance clock is a mechanism that creates a durable record of an employee's arrival and departure times. The concept is straightforward, but the execution has evolved through several distinct technologies. The earliest, and still most iconic, is the mechanical time clock, patented in the late 19th century. The core component of a mechanical time clock is a timekeeping mechanism, usually a small, spring-driven or electrically-powered clock movement. This movement drives a set of gears that turn two circular plates. One plate has the employee's name or an identification number and a slot, and the other plate holds the time scale.
