Towable rafts and tubes are inflatable devices designed to carry one or more people across the water's surface while being pulled by a motorized boat. They are distinct from other inflatable watercraft, such as kayaks or stand-up paddleboards, because they are not self-propelled and have no hull of their own in the traditional sense. They are completely dependent on a tow vessel, a tow line, and a rider capable of holding on. The category includes a wide range of shapes, from the simple single-rider tube, which is essentially an inflated donut, to multi-rider deck boats with molded seats, padded bolsters, and hybrid hulls designed to plane at speed.

For a professional—whether that is a rental operator, an instructor, a marina manager, or a serious owner—it is important to understand that a towable is a piece of engineering designed to work with specific forces, not just a toy. The core function is the conversion of the tow vessel's forward motion into speed and lift. When a towable is pulled, it accelerates until the hydrodynamic lift generated by its hull and the aerodynamic lift of its shape overcome its mass and water drag. At this point, it is said to be "planing" on top of the water.
