A train case is a rugged, reusable transport container built to protect professional equipment from the physical abuse of travel. Its defining features are a rigid structural frame, reinforced corners, a hinged lid, and a hardware set designed for repeated opening and closing. The term "train case" comes from the earliest mass-produced examples, which were built for musicians and performers carrying instruments and supplies from city to city by rail. The engineering problem those cases solved was not a romantic one. They were built to take a fall from a luggage cart, to sit in a baggage hold beneath a summer sun, to be stacked three high in a van, and to keep doing that for years.

The name has stuck, but the job has expanded. The same fundamental design now protects audio mixing consoles, medical diagnostic equipment, photography lighting heads, firearms, fragile scientific instruments, and heavy mechanical tools. Whatever the contents, the case's job remains constant: it must absorb kinetic energy, transfer load across its frame, and shield its payload from impact, vibration, dust, and moisture.
