Chapter 1: Understanding Transfer Paper

Transfer paper is a temporary carrier. It holds an image, usually printed with an inkjet or laser printer, and then releases that image onto another surface when heat and pressure are applied. That is the entire concept, and it sounds simple. But the carrier is not neutral. It is an active part of the process, and its physical properties determine how much ink transfers, how the image adheres to the destination surface, and how well it survives washing, bending, or exposure. A poor choice of carrier can destroy what looks like a perfect print.

Consider a concrete example from a real production environment. A print shop in a mid-sized city receives an order for fifty cotton t-shirts with a four-color logo. The shop uses a standard 16x20 inch heat press and an Epson inkjet printer. If the operator loads the dark fabric transfer paper into the printer without checking the coating side, or uses a light-fabric paper on a black shirt, the logo will be translucent and the shirt color will bleed through. That is a failure of understanding the material, not of the printer or the press.
