What This Chapter Covers

This is a reference handbook for a category of products that most people never think about as a category at all. A treadmill accessory is any physical component or device that is not part of the base treadmill package but is designed to attach to, interface with, or be worn while using a treadmill. This definition intentionally excludes the treadmill itself — the deck, the motor, the console, the belt, the rollers — none of which are accessories to themselves. An accessory is an addition or a replacement that changes the machine's function, protects the machine or the user, or improves the experience of using it.

That definition covers a broad range of items, and it helps to see the range in concrete terms. On the safety side, you have magnetic safety tethers (often called kill switches), which stop the belt if the user falls; clip-on lanyards; and non-slip mats that protect the floor and reduce vibration. On the comfort side, there are cooling fans, padded deck mats, handlebar grips, and ergonomic running decks that can be bolted over the existing belt. On the entertainment and connectivity side, there are tablet holders, phone clips, sound bars, and console-mounted device stands.
