Chapter 1: Understanding Underwater Camera Housings
The underwater camera housing is the most unglamorous piece of professional imaging equipment you will ever own. It is a precision container, a sealed box with one primary imperative: keep water away from a camera and allow a human to operate that camera effectively from the outside. Every dive, every deployment, every shoot starts and ends with that simple premise. Forgetting this is the root of most failures, ruined equipment, and lost opportunities. This chapter establishes the fundamental principles of the housing, what it does, how it does it, and why a working knowledge of the mechanics is the foundation for every other decision you will make in this field.
To understand the housing, you must first understand its environment. Air at sea level exerts a pressure of one atmosphere. Water adds pressure rapidly. Every ten meters you descend in the ocean adds another atmosphere of pressure. At twenty meters depth, the pressure on your equipment is three times what it is on the surface. At forty meters, it is five times. This force acts on every square centimeter of the housing's surface area. A typical mirrorless camera housing has a surface area of roughly 1,200 square centimeters. At a depth of forty meters, the total hydrostatic force pressing inward on that housing is approximately 6,000 kilograms, or about 6 tons. If the housing is not built to withstand this force, considering its shape, seals, and material thickness, it will deform, crack, or implode.
